New genetic test for dermoid sinus

1. March2025

Dermoid Sinus Project of the DZRR (as of February 2025)
The results of our Dermoid Sinus (DS) project achieved at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover under the direction of Prof Dr Ottmar Distl were subjected to a renewed analytical and statistical examination by the company Laboklin on the basis of approx. 500 blood samples from the DZRR population. We are pleased to announce that Laboklin is ready to implement the goal of our 10-year effort and will offer a DS test on the market from 1 March 2025.

Summary of the details:

  • Genetic test for DS: The test analyses two genetic markers that are associated with an increased risk of DS.
  • Possible genotypes: There are various combinations of genes (e.g. AACC, TTCC, ATGG, etc.).
  • Risk assessment:
    • ATCG & ATGG:Dogs with these genotypes have a very low risk of developing DS (80-90% are healthy).
    • TTCC: 83 % of dogs with this genotype suffer from DS → so a very high risk!

Importance for breeding
  • Goal: Avoid puppies with the high-risk genotype TTCC.
  • Recommendation: Mating that could result in TTCC should be avoided.
  • Aids: The table shows which matings are green (safe, TTCC cannot occur) or red (risky, TTCC can occur).

Dermoid Sinus Gentest

Summary
The genetic test can be used for targeted breeding to minimise the risk of DS. Dogs with risky genotypes should not be bred to each other in order to further reduce the likelihood of puppies being born with DS.

Gentest
The genetic test (test number 8945) can be ordered via Laboklin and the result is available after approx. 1-2 weeks. The normal cost is CHF 73.35 and CHF 59.10 for breeding association members (plus VAT)

Suitable sample material is an EDTA blood sample, cheek swabs or Laboklin can carry out the test from samples that have already been stored. Simply send a short e-mail with the old result number to labogen@laboklin.com
